How they are made

Silk scrunchies, and what silk actually does

Four multi-colored zig zag headbands for women, shown in a pack, designed for non-slip hair styling.

Silk and seamless elastics solve two different problems and are often talked about as though they solve the same one. A seamless tie removes a pressure point. Silk reduces friction against the hair surface.

If your complaint is a crease, a seamless elastic is the answer. If it is frizz, breakage at the ends or hair that looks roughed up after being tied, silk is the one worth paying for.

Friction is a cuticle problem

The outer layer of a hair shaft is made of overlapping scales. Anything that drags against them repeatedly lifts those scales, and lifted scales are what read as frizz and what eventually break.

Silk has a considerably smoother surface than cotton or standard synthetics, so hair slides against it rather than catching. That is the whole mechanism and it is a real effect rather than marketing.

Momme is the weight measure

Silk is measured in momme rather than thread count. For accessories, something in the high teens to low twenties is substantial; much below that and the fabric is thin enough that the elastic inside dominates.

A listing that states a momme weight is telling you something. One that only says silk-feel or satin is describing a finish rather than a fibre, and satin is a weave that can be made from anything.

Telling mulberry silk from satin

Mulberry silk is a specific cultivated fibre and it is stated as such when it is used, because it costs more. Polyester satin looks similar in a photograph and behaves differently: it is smooth but it does not breathe and it holds static.

Static is the giveaway in use. Silk does not build a charge against hair; polyester satin does, particularly in winter.

Washing without ruining it

Cool water, a gentle detergent, by hand, and never wrung. Silk loses strength when wet and twisting it is what breaks fibres. Press it in a towel and air dry away from direct heat.

A machine on a delicate cycle inside a mesh bag is survivable but shortens its life noticeably. Hot water and standard detergent strip the protein and leave the fabric dull and rough – at which point the friction benefit is gone.

Where the benefit is largest

Overnight. Hair spends six to eight hours moving against a surface while you sleep, which is far more contact than a daytime ponytail, so a silk tie for sleeping does more than a silk tie worn for an hour.

Long, fine and chemically treated hair sees the biggest difference. Short, thick and untreated hair sees the least, and it is fair to say so rather than claim a universal benefit.

It is not a substitute for a seamless tie

A silk scrunchie still applies pressure, distributed across a wide band. For most people that is gentle enough, but a scrunchie tied very tightly will still mark.

The two are complementary. Seamless elastics for daytime holding power, silk for overnight and for hair that is prone to surface damage.
