How they are made

Why hair ties leave a dent, and which ones do not

A large pack of 288 ADRIONE colorful hair ties, featuring a wide array of 40 different vibrant colors.

The dent left after taking a ponytail out is a mechanical effect and it has a specific cause: a single hard point pressing into a bundle of hair for several hours. Change the point and the dent goes away.

That is essentially the whole story of why hair tie construction matters, and why three different constructions exist on this counter.

The metal crimp is the culprit

A traditional elastic is a loop of covered rubber joined by a small metal ferrule. That ferrule is rigid, narrow and considerably harder than the fabric around it, so all of the tension concentrates where it sits.

Hair held under concentrated pressure takes a set, which is the same mechanism that lets a curling iron work. Several hours is more than enough, and hair that is at all fine will show it for the rest of the day.

Seamless elastics have no join at all

A seamless tie is a continuous fabric-covered loop with the ends bonded rather than clamped. There is no hard point anywhere on the circumference, so the tension distributes evenly around the bundle.

They are also gentler on the hair surface because there is no exposed metal edge to catch a cuticle. This is the reason they have largely displaced crimped elastics for daily use.

Spiral ties spread the load differently

A spiral or coil tie works on a different principle: instead of a single loop under tension, it is a helix that grips along its length. No part of it presses hard because the holding force is distributed over several turns.

They also do not soak up water, which makes them the practical choice for swimming and for tying hair up while it is still damp. The trade-off is bulk and that they can slip in very fine or very smooth hair.

Fabric-wrapped and scrunchies

A scrunchie is an elastic core inside a fabric tube, so the fabric spreads the pressure across a wide contact area. That width is why they are the gentlest option of all and why they are recommended for sleeping.

Silk in particular reduces friction against the hair surface as well as pressure, which is a separate benefit from the crease question. Cotton and synthetic scrunchies solve the pressure problem but not the friction one.

Thickness has to match the hair

A thin mini elastic on thick hair is under enormous tension and will both mark and snap. A thick elastic on fine hair needs so many turns that it becomes a lump.

Match the tie to the bundle: minis for braid ends and small sections, standard seamless for a full ponytail, thick elastics for genuinely thick hair. Most households need two sizes rather than one.

When a crease is not the tie’s fault

Hair tied up while wet will take a set regardless of what it is tied with, because hair is far more plastic when damp. That is the hairdressing equivalent of setting a curl, and no tie prevents it.

The same applies to hair tied very tightly. A gentle tie under extreme tension is still extreme tension, and repeated tight styling is worth avoiding for reasons beyond the crease.
